Now that I've laid all the groundwork, where do we go from here?
I'll spend a couple of posts providing some suggestions for how to get your organization started with the product management discipline. Hopefully, it will provide a good way to get people onto the same page for making or accelerating the transition for the parts of your organization that would benefit from this new approach.
From there...it's up to you. We'll add posts as we go. Sometimes we'll pick up interesting topics from other sources such as analyst publications or surveys; other times we'll respond to customer feedback or market direction. And, of course, we'll always
find time to respond to comments or posts, so if something is on your mind, let us know.
So -- getting started. Here are some things you can do today to begin/further your organization's product management journey:
- Document your terms
- Your organization -- or parts of your organization -- may use these terms or some alternative; get it all down on paper.
- Product; Value (Unit); Product Manager vs Product Owner; Program Management
- Allow some autonomy here -- just keep a translation guide handy if necessary
- Take inventory
- Do you already have an inventory of “products” available?
- If not, start with what you fund and work from there.
- Do you have product management skills in the organization? Product marketing skills?
- Start thinking about how to brand your cross-coordination (if “program management” doesn’t work)
- Decide how you are going to register and commit deliverables and deadlines
- Begin crafting a game plan to address any gaps from this assessment
