Rally Office Hours August 11, 2022 Recap

As a follow-up from our August 11, Rally Office Hours session, we’d like to share some highlights in addition to the questions that were asked, along with their respective answers.

This week’s learning corner featured how to leverage Google Docs into Rally

Thank you to all who joined us live. We appreciate your feedback and participation in the last session and are looking forward to our next one. If you were not able to attend, there is always an opportunity to ask questions here on the Rally Community discussion board and we'll do our best to answer.

Join us every Thursday, at 12 PM ET (register for upcoming sessions). We look forward to connecting with you!

August 11, Session Recap

Q: Which user permissions for a project can add and open attachments?

A: This will need to be an enhancement request. Our current permission model allows to grant permissions to projects. You can set an Edit or a View permission on any project. A user with Edit permissions to a project will be able to take any action on all work items in that project, i.e add items, modify them, set and create tags, include or remove attachments, add comments, reassign the items etc etc.  . A user with View permissions can only view all item and is unable to make any changes (including not to add/remove attachments).  We have received requests for a more granular permission model that will also constrain what users can and can not do within a project they're permitted to, but this is not currently our model.

Q: What controls can we exercise with tags? Can we limit creation of new tags? Can we add a tool tip or pop up window with instructions?

A: Currently, anyone permitted to Edit a project is able to create/modify/edit/delete all information in that project. This includes tags. Such users will be able to create, assign, rename tags.  Tags can also be archived or deleted but that is only available for the Workspace Administrator. Your request to add tooltip, or constrain the ability to create tags - is a valid request, but will need to be a RFE considering it's unavailable today.

Q: Was there a presenation on an update on the cycle time? One of my users asked this: Have the cycle time calculated on monday-friday (not including weekends) .

A: The Workspace has "Working Days" where the workspace admin will specify what are the working days of this workspace. The default is Mon-Fri and normally no one changes that.

The Cycle Time, as well as all of Rally, excludes any day which is not a work day of that workspace. So, in short: Yes, weekends are excluded, unless your workspace mistakenly has those defined as work days.

Q: Great tip!  does it work with other things besides Google Docs?

A: You can use the Custom URL app for any URL. However, in our tool we showed a Live Google Doc that will be updated in Rally in real time when it's being updated elsewhere. This functionality is not a Rally functionality but a Google Doc functionality. So, to answer your question: any URL can be included in a Rally Custom URL app, but only if the contents of that url can respond to live updates then that will be reflected in Rally as well.

Q: Is there any way to add the timeline to a custom dashboard?   Currenly I dont see anyway to do this with the new "timeline" feature.

A: Unfortunately we don't have a Timeline app at this time. Only apps can be added to a dashboard or a custom page. There aren't plans to create such an app in the near term. However, we demonstrated on the call that you use use the Custom URL app and paste into it the Rally Timeline page URL.  This will then make the Timeline page available in your dashboard App. However, keep in mind this app is not limited to the Timeline page and you will be able to navigate Rally in that app.  Still, it's a nice little workaround that can fit your need.

Q: I have an REST API question.  I am creating a new defect via python code and I am trying to set the FlowState but it will not change.  Is there an example somewhere that shows how to change the FlowState

A: FlowState is an object, not just a field, therefore when setting its value you'll need to use the ObjectID of the flowstate and not its name. We will contact the customer and provided both JSON and Python examples.

Q: Is there a way we can display Release /Iterations Timebox descriptions & details on a page for presentation purposes?

A: While there isn't an app in Rally to show this as requested, a cool way to get this done will be if you maintain a Google Doc where you list the information you need, then include it in a Custom URL app (available in our App Catalog) in your dashboard or custom page, and then you'll have the timebox details you requested.
