  • 1.  Who is using TSO HELP for OPS/MVS commands?

Greetings OPS/MVS Community members! I'm Ray Mullins, an SE for OPS/MVS, and on behalf of the development staff, I'm posing a question to the community.
A customer recently reported that one of the OPS/MVS TSO command members in the TSO HELP data set (CCXLHENU) was missing a keyword. We took this as an opportunity to check the validity of the command HELP members against the current TSO commands, and we found a small number of additional discrepancies. As no one had reported issues with these members in well over a decade, we are wondering how often customers use the TSO HELP command, or tools such as the CBT Tape ZTSOHELP, against command members such as OX, OPSGETV, and OPSSETV.
We are not concerned with use of the individual message members, as they are used by our OPSLOG message lookup function, and could be used as well externally by TSO HELP or other programs.
So, dear customers, we are asking for your input. Do you use the OPS/MVS command TSO HELP members, and if so, how? If you do not use them, do you have any strong feelings? Or did you use to use them decades ago but as time marched on, you stopped?
Thank you in advance for your comments.

    Hi Ray,

To be honest, I was unaware that OPS/MVS commands coupld be found in TSO HELP. I assume this requires that CCXLHENU has actualy been added to the SYSHELP TSO DDNAME?

    Thanks,

    Steve

In my field experience, most customers are using QwikRef or looking up the
    messages in our techdocs.

Sadly we dont have QwikRef (most other sites in our company do) and finding docs on Broadcom;s website gets frustrating (as the bookmarks seem to keep chainging), but yes - that's what I use. I#ll talk to the people that install it about adding it to TSO HELP

    Hello Steve,

Yes, you are correct, the CCLXHENU data set needs to be concatenated to the SYSHELP DD. (At least that's how I would do it, I can think of several not-recommended ways to accomplish the same thing. 😁)

    Cheers,
    Ray

So, dear customers, we are asking for your input. Do you use the OPS/MVS command TSO HELP members,
YES!! I was shown this awesome feature and have found it helpful.  Being a new user I probably do not spot some of the errors.  Some amazing Broadcom team members shared this awesome features!!

and if so, how? If you do not use them, do you have any strong feelings? Or did you use to use them decades ago but as time marched on, you stopped?

Well, yes I do use TSO HELP on a regular basis for a quick help (thats what its for) .. Also use QuickRef and/or manual for more detailed help.

Yes, I customized the REXX program that launches opsView to concatenate the OPS/MVS TSO help dataset, and when I teach OPS/MVS classes, I have the students lookup the syntax for various commands that way. We have a user-written front-end for help that displays the TSO HELP output in an ISPF View session, so it is scrollable and you can use FIND. Broadcom could easily add such a feature to opsView.

One issue that could be remedied is that the aliases for commands are not defined as help members. We commonly use OI to run an OPS/REXX program, but you must issue HELP OPSIMEX to get the help for OI. Same problem for OX (must use HELP OPSEXEC) and OR (must use HELP OPSRMT).
