This document describes the SiteMinder Policy Server Registry Reader, a field-developed tool designed to simplify the analysis of Policy Server configuration data.Overview and Key Functionality

The SiteMinder Policy Server configuration information is stored within a registry file, saved as sm.registry on Linux systems. While the data within this file is often presented in confusing hexadecimal values, the Policy Server Reader tool-an HTML-based file-reads these values and converts them into decimal format for easy review.

This tool is particularly useful for administrators who need to read SiteMinder Policy Server configurations on a local machine where a graphical interface, such as XWindows, is not available in the Linux environment. In addition to value conversion, the tool indicates the scope and usage of each value based on the SiteMinder 12.9 manual.

The registry file is structured hierarchically, similar to a file system:

    • Hives: These are the root containers for the registry (e.g., HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Netegrity\SiteMinder).

    • Keys and Sub keys: These act as directory paths (e.g., HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Netegrity\SiteMinder\CurrentVersion\PolicyServer).

    • Values: These are the actual data entries, composed of three elements:

      • Name: The label identifying the specific setting.

      • Type: The "Data Type" (e.g., REG_SZ or REG_DWORD)

      • Data: The content itself.

    How to Use the Tool

Follow these steps to analyze your Policy Server registry file:

    1. Obtain the necessary file: either download the sm.registry file or export the required registry key using the Windows Registry Editor program.

    2. Open the HTML reader file, click "Choose File," and select the registry file you wish to analyze.

    3. Click the "Analyze Registry" button.

    Output Information

Upon analysis, the tool displays information categorized under:

    • Policy Server Version

    • Policy Server Configuration

    • Policy Store

    • Key Store

    • Session Store

    • Audit and Logging

The output includes three key columns: Attribute Name, Value, and Default information. The "Default" column uses information derived from the SiteMinder 12.9 technical documentation.

For further detailed information, the tool provides a direct reference link to the SiteMinder 12.9 manual page.
