  • 1.  Question regarding the Test Data Manager licensing

    Posted 8 days ago

    Hi All,

    I'm a reseller of Broadcom products. I have received an inquiry from a customer regarding Test Data Manager. Please confirm whether Test Data Manager meets the customer's use case described below. If it does, please let us know which license applies.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ◆Target Product
    CA Test Data Manager
    ・CA Test Case Optimizer
    The background to this is that, in the ETL tool migration project currently underway at our company, improving the efficiency of coverage testing during integration testing (CT) has become a key challenge. In particular, we are facing a heavy workload in terms of test criterion design, test case creation, and test data generation.
    ◆Tasks to be streamlined
    ・Comprehensive extraction of test criteria for ETL transformation logic and branching conditions
    ・Test case creation
    ・Creation of test data, including failure scenarios and boundary values
    We would like to confirm whether the target product is suitable for this use case (CT coverage testing during ETL migration).
    Hi Junya,
    Thank you for reaching out. Yes, Broadcom's continuous testing portfolio is an excellent fit for your customer's ETL migration project.
    To fully address all three of their target tasks, the ideal solution involves combining Broadcom Agile Requirements Designer (ARD) (formerly CA Test Case Optimizer) with Broadcom Test Data Manager (TDM).
    Here is how these products align with their use cases, along with their core capabilities.
    ARD vs. TDM
    For this specific project, ARD is an absolute must-have. It directly handles the heavy lifting of visually mapping out complex ETL transformation logic, extracting precise test criteria, and automatically designing optimized test cases.
    However, TDM is highly recommended as a companion tool. While ARD maps the logic of what to test, it relies on TDM to actually provision the "real-like" data needed to execute those tests. TDM allows them to mask sensitive production data to make it safe for testing, or synthetically generate the exact boundary values and failure scenarios required to feed ARD's test paths.
    Broadcom Agile Requirements Designer (ARD)
    ARD perfectly maps to the customer's request for comprehensive test criteria extraction and automated test case creation using model-based testing.
    • Visual Logic Modeling: Testers can model complex ETL transformation logic and branching conditions into visual flowcharts. This allows for the comprehensive extraction of test criteria and exposes hidden logic gaps before code execution.
    • Optimized Test Case Creation: From the visual model, ARD uses mathematical path analysis to automatically calculate and generate the minimum number of test cases required to achieve 100% functional coverage, completely eliminating over-testing.
    • Direct Data Mapping: When a specific logical path (like a boundary value error) is mapped in ARD, it defines the exact data characteristics required, telling the data layer precisely what needs to be tested.
    Broadcom Test Data Manager (TDM)
    The primary purpose of TDM is high-efficiency test data provisioning, ensuring that integration testing (CT) isn't delayed by manual data creation or compliance bottlenecks.
    • Synthetic Data Generation: Automatically creates high-volume, realistic test data from scratch to cover edge cases and negative "what-if" scenarios that rarely exist in production data.
    • Data Masking & Anonymization: Takes existing production datasets and safely obfuscates sensitive information while maintaining complex referential integrity across your databases.
    • Data Subsetting: Extracts smaller, structurally sound subsets from massive legacy databases to speed up ETL pipeline testing and save infrastructure space.
    Licensing
    To make this highly cost-effective for your customer, we recommend positioning the ARD User SKU (ARDUSR990). Licensed on maximum concurrent usage.
    A major advantage of licensing the ARD User SKU is that it includes native access to TDM's synthetic data generation capabilities. This means that directly from the ARD model interface, users can define data rules and synthetically generate the exact failure scenarios, edge cases, and boundary values they requested-without needing to purchase a separate, full-scale enterprise TDM license up front. They would only need a standalone TDM license if their use case expands to include large-scale production data masking or complex database subsetting.
    Because TDM is licensed based on the specific architectural footprint, user counts, or core metrics of the customer's environment, we would love to set up a brief discovery call to map out the exact licensing framework that fits their budget and project scale.
    Could you let us know a few availability windows next week for a quick technical deep-dive with you?
    Best regards,
    Pavel
    Hi Pavel,
    Thank you for the information. I will pass on the information you provided to the client. I will check with the client regarding the meeting. Can ARD and TDM be operated by customers on their own without the need for special technical support?
    Best regards,
    Junya
    Hi,
    Yes  ARD and TDM is very often operated by customers. What do you mean by special technical support?
    Hi Pavel,
    Thank you for your reply. I am referring to support for environment setup during implementation and ongoing operations. We do not have the resources to provide such support.
    Best regards,
    Junya
    Hi,
    this needs to be discussed offline. It depends on the contract. Please ping me on email and we can organize a meeting.
    Thanks
