Introduction: A simplified history of formal PM .
Project management (PM) has been around in some fashion since cities and historical structures were being created .
Over time, formal project management arose. This was driven by powerful project management software. coupled with project management emerging into a discipline/profession. In time, PM captured the niche for time-driven, complex, and interdependent projects.
A new alternative
But the term project management brings to some a bad taste thinking of the complexity, time, and organizational involved.
With tasks moving at a faster pace, a different approach was needed for smaller projects.
- Projects bubble up when needed, get worked on, then close down.
- Scope is fairly small.
- Anyone interested can join a project.
- Optionally:
- Have an tracking page and discussion group for all projects.
- Have an tracking page and discussion group for the specific project.
- Have a project "mentor" to talk things over with as needed.
- If interested, have a brief after-action review meeting /write-up to capture what did and did not work.
- Use your own terminology if PM verbage annoys your team.
- Rinse and repeat.
I would welcome your feedback on the following:
- you have done something like this.
- Your experience with the effort
-Questions that you may have on this approach.
