We're excited to introduce a new "Ancestors" filter option available in the general Rally filters on lists and boards, including the Custom List Widget.
What is the "Ancestors" Filter?
The "Ancestors" filter allows you to filter your User Stories, Defects, and Portfolio Items by any ancestor in the portfolio hierarchy. This means you can pinpoint work items associated with specific strategic initiatives, programs, features, or any other portfolio item, from the Story or Defect level all the way up to your highest-level goals.
How to Use It:
When configuring Quick Filters or Advanced Filters for User Stories, Defects, and Portfolio Items, you'll find a new "Ancestors" filter option in the dropdown.

Select "Ancestors" from the filter field dropdown.

Search: In the search box, type a Formatted ID or Name to find the desired Ancestor(s) (Portfolio Items) you wish to filter by.

Select: Choose one or more Ancestors from the search results. Rally will then filter your list to show artifacts that have at least one of your selected items in their ancestry.
Important Considerations:

Applicability: The "Ancestors" filter applies to Portfolio Items, User Stories, and Defects that are directly parented to a Portfolio Item.

Limitations: It does not apply to other artifact types, nor to Defects or User Stories that are not directly parented to Portfolio Items.

Search Scope: When searching for Ancestors within the filter, you will see Portfolio Items within the direct hierarchy (both up and down) of your currently selected Project, provided you have access to them.
We believe the "Ancestors" filter will be a valuable addition to your Rally toolkit, providing enhanced flexibility and insight into your portfolio. We encourage you to explore this new capability!
