Is it possible to change the context type of a device in DX PM?

    Hello

Is it possible to change the context type of an equipment in DX PM?

For example, to change from a "router" type to "firewall" or "load balancer"?

    Thank you.

A device needs to be 1 of 4 base types, Device, Router, Switch, Server.  But can be also added to the other context types we provide in DeviceTypes.xml (Firewall, Load Balancer, WAP, WC)

    Hello Jeffrey,

    One question:
    - you say above that a device needs to be 1 of 4 base types, Device, Router, Switch, Server.. but I saw some devices that only have "Firewall" or "Load Balancer"

Is it possible to change a device from "Switch / Load Balancer" to only "Load Balancer"?
     (an F5 LB for example)

    Thank you.

It needs to have one of the 4 types.  If it's not a Switch, Router or Server, then add to the Device section which means "just a device".

Then you can add any of the additional context types to it.

Hope these Knowledge Base articles help. They should come up when searching the support using terms like "Device Type Performance Management".

How are Device Type values selected for devices in Performance Management

How are DeviceTypes.xml file changes processed by Performance Management

Debugging problems with device type overrides in CA Performance Management

    Hi Michael n Jaffrey,

Thanks for the details on device type overrides, However this data should auto update from the MIB's and sysOID's discovered as part of the models that we discover in Dx netops PM/CAPC. we are on latest version of 23.3.13, yet we have bunch of overrides for any specific models. if we keep updating this xml manually, product capability will get degrade . your inputs on this are highly appreciated please.

Is there any development in progress around this context types in upcoming releases from Broadcom engineering teams

Keep an eye out on release notes for each version. Updates to supported devices are specified there. You can then remove the overrides from the XML configuration file.

It is and will be a manual process, due to the nature of the changes. It's an override.

When it comes to DeviceTypes, the first and foremost way to set the device type is sysServices and ipForwarding MIB objects if the device has them.  We can determine Router/Switch/Server by those 2 values.  The DeviceTypes.xml internal file is a way for us to decide to say it's a Server instead of a Switch if the OIDs indicate a switch.  Also, it allows us to assign the firewall/WAP/WAC/LB context type to the device if we know we are certifying a firewall, etc...

But the main problem is we only update the internal DeviceTypes.xml when we are asked to certify a specific device or family (depending on the request).  So if no customer is asking for an updated cert because nothing has changed except some new sysOID are defined, we don't go updating DeviceTypes.xml.

We rely on customers to contact vendors to provide the latest MIB files when requesting cert updates.  Vendors have not been forthcoming on providing them to us without buying their equipment.

So that's why we have the ability for customers to add missing sysOID to define as a device type they wish, if sysServices doesn't already label the device as Router/Switch/Server.

In addition to DeviceTypes.xml, there is apache-karaf/etc/ModelMap.cfg that can be created and updated to state the model of a sysOID.  Example:

    1.3.6.1.4.1.10418.7.1.2=Avocent DSR 2161
