Clarity upgrade from 14.3 to 15.3

  • 1.  Clarity upgrade from 14.3 to 15.3

    Posted 04-19-2018 03:04 PM

We are currently planning our clarity upgrade from 14.3 to 15.3. We will be installing the PPM 15.3 version on a brand new box.

Can we start our installation on the new boxes from 15.2.0 base version? or do we have to go back and follow a specific upgrade path from a specific base version?

For upgrade planning recommend if have not already review the Change Impact and Upgrade Guide for supported upgrade paths for Release 15.3.

Change Impact and Upgrade (On Premise) - CA PPM - 15.3 - CA Technologies Documentation

For example Supported Patch Level for Upgrade > Patch 14.3.0.10 on the base version 14.3.0

    Hi George

    1. If you want to upgrade your 14.3 version, you have to follow the steps to actually get it upgraded from 14.3, which  includes going through 14.4, 15.1, 15.2 and 15.3. This process also upgrades the database.

    2. If you only do a new install on the new box, you will not be able to upgrade your database from 14.3 to 15.3, and connecting it will not work.

If you still want to have a new install of PPM application on the new boxes though, you could do both approach 1 and 2, meaning:

    1. You upgrade your existing environments in place, including database from 14.3 to 15.3

    2. You perform a new install of 15.3 on the new servers (direct new install)

    3. You link the database to new servers and you restart

At this point I don't see a benefit to go via 15.2, unless there is something that you haven't mentioned.

    Hope this helps -Nika

    Hi Nika,

What do you mean by perform a new install of 15.3 on the new servers (direct new install) ? Can you please elaborate? Do you have a guide that explains how to achieve that?

    Thanks,

    -George

    Hi Georges,

A new install would be when you simply install the CA PPM files from scratch on a new server as if you were just starting with CA PPM. This would install the CA PPM files and start the CSA. This usually takes 15-30 min. At this point you would link the new install to a 15.3 database (could be brand new vanilla or upgraded, just has to be the same version level).

Upgrade would be to point the installer to an existing prior version CA PPM installation and database, and it would go via the process to upgrade both the CA PPM application files and database to the correct version. This is a longer process.

Here is the documentation about it, check the Install CA PPM vs Upgrade CA PPM chapter:

Installing and Upgrading - CA PPM - 15.3 - CA Technologies Documentation

Let me know for any questions -Nika

    What does "15.3 database" means?

If we install oracle 12c and created a niku schema on 12c and imported the data from version 14.3 to the 12c schema. We won't be able to connect to a new 15.X install?

Correct, the 14.3 database will have to be upgraded first to 15.3. You can only link same version application to same version database.

So that's what i'm planing to do:

    1. A new install of CA PPM 15.2 on the new box

    2. Upgrade oracle from 11g to 12c (proper version and patches)

    3. Create a new niku schema on 12c

    4. Import a backup of the 14.3 data to the 12c schema

This should work? Can you please confirm.

    Thanks.

No this will not work as the database will not be upgraded.

So you plan to upgrade Oracle as well as moving CA PPM to new servers? What is the exact version you are going for, 15.2 or 15.3? Please let me know what is the exact goal here and I will advise.

we are trying to upgrade to 15.3 but if I can get to 15.2 on the new box using this path it will work for us.

How come it will not work?

What if a new client just starting a new install? He won't be able to start at 15.2?

It will start but with the completely clean data, you will not get your existing 14.3 data upgraded and will not be able to use it and test it. I don't think that's what you'll want.

I would suggest you to do the following:

    1. Upgrade Oracle from 11g to 12c (proper version and patches)

    2. Upgrade the current CA PPM directly to 15.3 (this will upgrade both the app and db to 15.3)

    3. A new install of 15.3 on the new box (can also move the application files as suggested below by Shubham)

    4. Link the 15.3 Application on the new box to the upgraded to 15.3 CA PPM database

P.S. It is allowed to upgrade Oracle to 12c immediately prior to install so you should not be concerned with 15.3 not being compatible. So I don't think there is any benefit for you from going via 15.2.

We are on a windows platform (windows 2008 for version 14.3) how can I upgrade to 15.3 (requires windows 2012 or 2016)?

You could move OS platforms before or after upgrade, the supported required platforms are only to run CA PPM, not for the upgrade in process.

I'd suggest you raise a case with us in Support so we can have a call and discuss and clarify all the options you have. Feel free to refer to this post!

    Hi DND_admin ,

Another approach, I can understand with that you can also copy the CA PPM 14.3 application server files from old box to brand new box and modify the properties file to make it workable with new box.

Once CA PPM application (14.3) is up and running on new box then you can start the upgrade process to 15.3. Then you would get the CA PPM application 15.3 on new box.

In a footnote, make sure you stopped the clarity services on old box before copying to new box.

    Regards

    Shubham
