Preserve VSI data on subsequent deployments from Workstation

I am interested in finding best practices when it comes to deploying from Workstation to the VSE.

My responders are created in Workstation and the artifacts (VSI, VSM) are stored in my source control.  I understand when the responder is first deployed the VSI is empty.  Over the course of time, the VSI becomes populated with transaction data using Learning Mode.  I am looking for the best approach for future deployments so that the learned data in the VSI is not overwritten.

Should I create a process that updates the VSI in my source control prior to making any future deployments?

Is it possible to just remove the VSI from the .mari deployment descriptor and have it reuse the one already in the VSE?

    Thanks,
