  • 1.  What is the use of Navigator in Dashboard Designer (8.31)

    Posted Mar 10, 2016 09:28 AM

Relevance of this question: we experience ongoing problems with moving objects forward or backward.

Note: We like to move to UIM 8.4 but CA productmanagement stated: "we did not improve the dashboard designer in 8.4 since 8.31"

(yet, they removed the old dashboard designer in 8.4, this means that all flash based custom dashboards become unavailable per 8.4)

Trying to understand the full impact of migrating to 8.4, or to decide to stay on 8.31 for the near future.

    regards

There appear to be some small changes to 8.4 dashboard - you can turn off tooltips for instance. Also you can specify the URL or dashboard for the alarm widget.

It is still slow to render compared to the legacy dashboard and as often as not is displaying incorrect information because there seems to be something going on with refreshes not happening.

I'm staying on 8.31 for the indefinite future.

    Hi Garin,

Thanks for the response. Beside performance and useless features, the list of annoying issues is almost endless - and product management does not feel the need or urgency to improve it. This last for almost 2 years now. Frustrating. Recently started to look into the features and overall capabilities of building dashboard within SPLUNK>. First impression is that they have a rather sophisticated designer tool for building dashboards. Although not sure yet if they provide a freestyle environment enough for the things we need. But is looks rather user friendly sofar. Need and will investigate it more deeply. my only drive to upgrade is a better Dashboard Designer, as long as there are no substantial improvements reported I will either stay on 8.31 as long as possible.

Hi Ashley, sorry for the late response. The navigator now works in the dashboard portlet in UMP 8.47/8.5. When selecting a widget from the list the widget is highlighted as the line below:

The latest versions of the dashboard portlet include some new features and fixes. Unfortunately some of the fixes (as this navigator problem) are not documented.

Some of the documented enhancements and fixes:

    Dashboard Navigation Enhancements
New functionality allows the user to set a default dashboard and to define dashboard navigation to linked dashboards. In addition, the user can remove unneeded breadcrumbs from the dashboard path and unneeded tooltips from dashboard widgets. For more information, see the topic Restrict Dashboard Navigation.

Dashboard Context Selector Text Now Appears in Generated PDF Files (Support Case: 00373330)
In some cases, the text label for a context select box would not appear in a PDF generated using the Generate pdf option. This issue has been corrected, and the text label now consistently appears in PDFs.
