What is 'Area Number' in portcfgshow?

  • 1.  What is 'Area Number' in portcfgshow?

    Hi,

We recently got a refurbished SAN switch (Brocade 5100 / HP 8/40) and went through the normal check processes on my side.  However, I encountered something I've never seen before - the portcfgshow shows a different area number than the port number.  For instance, the switch showed port 31 but area number 23.  Other switches show port number = area number.

I have not found what area number does in any of the documentation.  Can someone enlighten me as to what are the implications if area number is different from port number?

Hey is it only for that port or it is different for all other ports.

If possible paste the output of 5 ports

    Hi,

It seemed to have resolved by itself.  Weird.

The first time I did portcfgshow it had this:

    Area Number:              24

    Speed Level:              AUTO(HW)

    Fill Word:                0(Idle-Idle)

    AL_PA Offset 13:          OFF

    Trunk Port                OFF

    Long Distance             OFF

    VC Link Init              OFF

    Locked L_Port             OFF

    Locked G_Port             OFF

    Disabled E_Port           OFF

    Locked E_Port             OFF

    ISL R_RDY Mode            OFF

    RSCN Suppressed           OFF

    Persistent Disable        ON

    LOS TOV enable            OFF

    NPIV capability           ON

    QOS E_Port                AE

    Port Auto Disable:        OFF

    Rate Limit                OFF

    EX Port                   OFF

    Mirror Port               OFF

    Credit Recovery           ON

    F_Port Buffers            OFF

    Fault Delay:              0(R_A_TOV)

    NPIV PP Limit:            126

    CSCTL mode:               OFF

Then I tried to do portcfgshow for every port and it fixed itself.....

    Area Number:              31

    Speed Level:              AUTO(HW)

    Fill Word:                0(Idle-Idle)

    AL_PA Offset 13:          OFF

    Trunk Port                OFF

    Long Distance             OFF

    VC Link Init              OFF

    Locked L_Port             OFF

    Locked G_Port             OFF

    Disabled E_Port           OFF

    Locked E_Port             OFF

    ISL R_RDY Mode            OFF

    RSCN Suppressed           OFF

    Persistent Disable        ON

    LOS TOV enable            OFF

    NPIV capability           ON

    QOS E_Port                AE

    Port Auto Disable:        OFF

    Rate Limit                OFF

    EX Port                   OFF

    Mirror Port               OFF

    Credit Recovery           ON

    F_Port Buffers            OFF

    Fault Delay:              0(R_A_TOV)

    NPIV PP Limit:            126

    CSCTL mode:               OFF

This one certainly have me stumped.  I think I'll put it down to a bug in 6.4.2b.

    Hi,

My colleague was logged in at the same time .

We resolved it by using the command 'portaddress --bind/unbind'.  Apparently it was bound to another address prior to our use.
