    Posted 09-21-2017 09:40 AM

We have an HP 8GB SAN switch for Bladesystem c-class 8/12c (aka Brocade 5480) that we want to upgrade from FOS 6.3.2e to 7.4.2. What is the upgrade path to get to 7.4.2. When I attempted to upgrade from 6.3.2e to 6.4.0 I get an "RPM fetch failed" message. I've trie other versions for 6.4.0x but I get the same result. How do I move forward. I am using the cli command firmwaredownload to perform the updates. Here's a sample of the rpm fetch failed message.

Firmware is being downloaded to the switch. This step may take up to 30 minutes.

     Hi ,

the recommended path from 6.3.2e to 7.4.2 :

    Hi Jerome,

I tried upgrading from 6.3.2e -> 6.4.3a but I got the same issue as before with the RPM Fetch failed message. It seems to be stopping at the same point. Any other ideas as to what is causing the rpm fetch failed message? Thanks.

    Hi RTNG,

you seems to have an issues downloading part of the firmware from server.  The 0x15 status indicates that switched could not access the next package in the firmwaredownload directory.  if possible, login as root and share the last part of the file /var/log/fwdl.log which might can give us some clues on what is going on here...  Also, if possible check the logs of the server if something is indicated there

    Hi,

can get the /var/log/wget.log file as root and look at the last part of to check what is possible causing issue with the swbd21-drivers-2.4.19-4.ppc.rpm. The firmwaredownload logs are /var/log/fwdl.log or fwlog.log.save

    Hello,

The wget.log is showing that the connection is timing out at the same file every time. I don't have a clue as to why it is doing this. Any ideas woule be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,

I would check the setting of your ethernet interface(s) (ifmodeshow "eth0" as admin), and errors on the interface (as root) "ifconfig".  Or like the ftp server under OpenVMS is closing the connection too quickly...

    Hi,

We looked at the interface used for the FTP server and disabled jumbo frames on the interface. This allowed the firmware download to successfully complete. Thanks for suggesting to look at the interfaces.

haha,, coolio. I got ya close, you took it the rest of the way. Didn't know you had jumbo frames enabled, of course - the switch only supports 1500, must of been blocking all along. glad it worked out.

Preface - I am no FTP guru by a long shot, but I notice from your FTP log that the timeouts are occuring exactly one minute apart:

    16:24:57

    16:25:57

    16:26:57

    16:27:57

Notwithstanding the location of the file when the connection is lost, this FTP timing is far to regular and specific to ignore. Suggest investigating the security settings on your FTP server? Use a different FTP facility? I recall some FTP utilities would drop the connection after one min of inactivity for security, however - again not a specialist on this by a long shot. Good luck
