Issues with Brocade FOS upgrade

  • 1.  Issues with Brocade FOS upgrade

    Posted 12-18-2013 09:35 AM

    Hi all,

I have a Brocade 48000 Director class switch and i am trying to upgrade its FOS from v5.3.2c to v6.0.0c and will follow the path to reach version v7.1.0a as my target code level.

    ED_48000B:xxx> version

    Kernel:     2.6.14

    Fabric OS:  v5.3.2c

    Made on:    Wed Sep 30 12:53:01 2009

    Flash:      Wed May 18 14:31:41 2011

    BootProm:   4.6.5

I am trying to pick the FOS from a linux server but upgrade is crashing. I uploaded the FOS to Linux server as a unpacked folder using WINSCP on my windows machine.

See below the error when i am trying to do firmware upgrade with unpacked version...

    ED_48000B:xxx> firmwaredownload

Server Name or IP Address: xx.xx.xx.xx

    User Name: xxxx

    File Name: /home/myuserid/v6.0.0c/

    Network Protocol(1-auto-select, 2-FTP, 3-SCP) [1]: 1

    Password:

    Checking system settings for firmwaredownload...

    Protocol selected: SCP

    Trying address-->AF_INET IP: xx.xx.xx.xx, flags : 2

The server is inaccessible or firmware path is invalid. Please make sure the server name or IP address, the user/password and the firmware path are valid. If SCP is selected, SSH server must support password authentication.

In above, you can see that the switch is not able to pick unpacked file. So, i tried to repack it in Linux and reused it. See below Output

    ED_48000B:xxx> firmwaredownload

Server Name or IP Address: xx.xx.xx.xx

    User Name: xxxx

    File Name: /home/myuserid/v6.0.0c.tar/

upgrade firmware on a single CP only, please use -s option.

You may run firmwaredownloadstatus to get the status of this

    be restarted.

Output from my linux home directory

    Hi,

Try as the File name the following:

    File Name: /home/myuserid/v6.0.0c/release.plist

This file does not exist but in old FOS releases, the upgrade procedure requested to do it this way. I am not sure if v6.0.0c is one of them...

Even tried to use FOS from brocade site directly but its ending with the same errors. I can not suspect SCP between linux server and brocade switch because scp from root seems to be working from both end. SCP from switch to Linux server: ED_48000B:root> ssh myuserid@xx.xx.xx.xx ls /home/myuserid/v6.0.0c Password: v6.0.0c SCP from Linux server to switch: myuserid@linux > ssh root@xx.xx.xx.xx ls /tmp root@xx.xx.xx.xx's password: __actplock.0 cal_flag cal_shm_file.0 calcache

Felipon did suggest you should list your home dir.

He suggested you try to append your path in firmwaredownload with /release.plist

ie in full something like /home/myuserid/v6.0.0c/release.plist

    Did you try that?

If you did what were the results?

Why dont you try to upgrade it via FTP instead?

You could also run the firmwaredownload from a win server to see if it fails.

FTP is not allowed in our company. So, my only option is SCP. I can use the SFTP also as an option but only after reaching 7.x version.

    hi Vivek,

In FOS package there are 2 zip files , one is FOS which contains images for all supported swicthes , the second file

    contains 3CDaemon software for Windows

That 3CDaemon acts as locally FTP service.

After proper configuration  you will be very easy to upgrade firmware on switch and that's the best way to do that

As I remember for SCP there's software WinSCP which should work well.

    see that link:  http://www.guldmyr.com/blog/brocade-san-switch-firmware-upgrades/

    rgds,

    Robert

Hi Robert, I wish i can use any kind of FTP feature :( Any kind of FTP request will be dropped on the way as FTP is blocked by firewall. I will try my hand on Winscp to see if i will have some success with it.

    Hi Vivek,

Well , you can do small work-around:

I presume you know switch all IP details , so...you can use some switch even home class (linksys, dlink) and setup network in such way so you wouldn't have to change ip on switch , then just assign proper ip on laptop so you could ping switch , then use Brocade 3CDaemon tool ;) , am not saying it's good solution but it will work however I don't know what will your manager say for that

    Robert

I agree with Robert, if scp fails, the fastest way would be to connect directly to each switch and upgrade it via ftp. There shouldn't be any security problem since you would not be using the corporate network.

Hey Guys, Thx for your valuable replies over the Christmas period :) The issue is that i am located in remote location so it will be hard to arrange direct connection to switch via a local network switch. And total switch count is around 100 which i need to upgrade. Previous employees were a bit slow with upgrades :) I am wasting my lot of time with scp issue and still didn't reach to some solution. I guess i will try a bit more and if no success i will go with my plan B (vendor help). All switches are under vendor support and they are able to come onsite to upgrade it. I just didn't consider this plan B from very beginning as i wanted to do the upgrades by myself. For the moment, wish you all a Happy New Year :)

The answer is likley that you need to have both CP's hooked up to the network in the same subnet and both need to have access to your SCP server. Otherwise you'll have to do it one-by-one with the -s parameter.

Secondly, be aware that firmware maintenance is a customer responsibility. Vendors are not obligated to maintain this side of the fence unless it is explicitly mentioned in the support-contract. (of which I'm sure around 99.9% isn't).

Thirdly the 48K does not support FOS 7.x so 6.4.x is your latest option.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Erwin, First, I tried the upgrade for switch which is in same subnet like my SCP server but still no success. Both CP's have ip addresses assigned from same subnet. Second, in my case, i am bit lucky with support contract :). Its premium support so they will do FOS upgrade also. Third, you are correct with supported FOS version for 48000. I just overlooked on this piece. Anyway, this switch is running on 5.x so it has to go till 6.4.

I had a similar issue with scp. I had to configure ftp in our test and development and that worked but scp still didn't.

Funny thing was that scp worked a couple of months earlier so I looked into /etc/ssh/sshd_config (Linux).

    If You change these:

    # To disable tunneled clear text passwords, change to no here!
    PasswordAuthentication yes
    PermitEmptyPasswords yes

and restart sshd, scp works again...
