    Posted 03-20-2019 04:50 AM

    Hi

I have two Brocade 5100 switches (OEM IBM). A week ago, when they worked under FabOS v6.4.3h they ware as 8G switches. After upgrade to v7.4.2c thay become only 4G. My all ports are N4Gbps and I could not chanage to N8Gbps. My SFP are:

    Transceiver: 540c404000000000 2,4,8_Gbps M5,M6 sw Short_dist

When I try to change port speed to 8G an error appears:

Mod_Inv Speed Mismatch / Incompatible SFP FAULTY

    Any suggestion?

    Best Regrds

    Hello,

do you have 8Gb License ?

    From License guide:

    8G licensing
    ATTENTION
The 8G license is installed by default and you should not remove it. Port operation may become
disrupted, and ports may be prevented from operating at 8 Gbps when the license is removed.
The 8G license applies to the Brocade 300, 5100, 5300, and VA-40FC switches and the 8 Gbps
embedded switches; this license does not apply to the Brocade 6505, 6510, or 6520.
14 Fabric OS Software Licensing Guide
    53-1003110-01
    2 Slot-based licensing
The following list describes the basic rules of using, adding, or removing 8G licenses:
    • Without an 8G license, even if there is an 8 Gbps SFP plugged into a port in an applicable
platform, the port would be enabled to run at a maximum speed of 4 Gbps.
    • To obtain an 8G license, only the license ID from the switch is required. When you add the 8G
license, you must enter either the portDisable and portEnable commands on each individual
port on the switch, or the switchDisable and switchEnable commands on the switch, to enable
    8 Gbps features.
    • When you remove the 8G license, the ports that are online and already running at 8 Gbps are
not disturbed until the port goes offline or the switch is rebooted. The switch ports return to
their pre-licensed state maximum speed of 4 Gbps.

Was that a direct single step upgrade from 6.4 to 7.4?

It was a long way to upgrade from v6.

    My full path was:

    v6.4.3h ---> v7.0.0d ---> v7.1.0c ---> v7.2.0b (maps convert) ---> v7.3.0c ---> v7.4.0b ---> v7.4.2c

    Licensesshow:

    Fabric license
    Fabric Watch license
    Extended Fabric license
    Trunking license
    Performance Monitor license
First Ports on Demand license - additional 8 port upgrade license
Second Ports on Demand license - additional 8 port upgrade license

At v6 and at v7.4 are the same (as above)

Full Fabric is also called the Fabric license (visible in licenseShow
output) as I read at FOS_LicenseGuide_v740.pdf

I have no idea what was happend.

    Hi

Thank you for your time and help.

All ports are affected. I have tested 3 types of sfp's: - native Brocade (IBM OEM), lets say Brocade compatible and HP-A. HP was only taken from new HPE switch for tests on my IBM OEM Brocade 5100 switch - type 2498-B40.

Native Brocade sfp and compatible works fine at this switch when it was running FabOS v6.4.3

I have tested sfp witch loopback plug button.

All sfps works at different switch (not the same about I talk) but the same model IBM 2498-B40 but under fabos 6.4.3h so thay are hardware healthy, I think.

    Hello,

sorry i doesn't menitoned id, but we need porlogdump when you change speed to 8Gb so there will be stamp what happened and why the spped not negotiate to 8Gb.

As i remmember for 8Gb platform you can only use Brocade branded SFPs.

And pelase share output of  sfpshow 15

    Hi,

Thank you one more. Bad luck - there is no my last entry. I repeat then again.

I have tested the problematic sfp's in another switch Brocade 5300 running FabOS 7.4.2d and switch recognize it properly - as N8.

Then back to this one with sfp problems - 5100 v7.4.2c - the same:  Speed Mismatch / Incompatible SFP. All output from my tests at attachement. What I have noticed: if there is no module at port it shows N8. See attch. If I plugin sfp port change switch to N4. This may evicence that sfp is not comatible but it works at 5300. Any idea? I have exhausted ideas.Do I have to accept this situation?

Please take a look at attachement.

    Hi

No, I did not change anything on the host side - neither hba's firmwares nor device drives. This switch was allocated  to different fabric (detached, cleared from any configuration, upgraded from 6.4.3 to 7.4 and attached to fabric with two other switches 4g to migrate hosts from 4 to 8g).

did you have a free port on the switch ? if yes, try follow please

Insert the SFP+ 8Gb, this must Brocade Supported.

    1) portcfgpersistentdisable "port_number"

    2) portcfgdefault "port_number"

    3) portcfglogclear "port_number"

    4) portcfgspeed "port_number" 8 where 8 is the speed

    4) portcfgpersistentenable "port_number"

now, post the eintire output from command

    Hi,

Yes, a few reboots, but there is no problem to perform another one. All FabOS was from Brocade site archieved via ibm support (redirected). Is it the simply and safely way to downgrade to 6.4?

    Hello,

as per release guide you may downgrade with steps back without any issues.

I am stil thinking about 8Gb license as the same behaviour is described in license guide:

Without an 8G license, even if there is an 8 Gbps SFP plugged into a port in an applicable
platform, the port would be enabled to run at a maximum speed of 4 Gbps.

Did you notice what was the exact FOS version during the multi-step upgrade when your switch refused to connect at 8G?

Do you have any configshow / configupload / supportshow / supportsave traces from any of the "past lives" of this switch?

Di you have a support case open for your issue?

Did you notice what was the exact FOS version during the multi-step upgrade when your switch refused to connect at 8G?

No. The base was 6.4.3h and 8G spf works as 8G. I did not check sfp compatibility during upgrade which I regret now.

Do you have any configshow / configupload / supportshow / supportsave traces from any of the "past lives" of this switch?

Unluckily I do not have any of the above. A history which I only have is Brocade SAN Health report.

Di you have a support case open for your issue?

No, this switch does not have any support. 5100 is EOS from August 2018 and this is my real problem.

Even worse. I have two more the same type switches 5100 (Type 66.1) running FabOS 6.4.3h fine and I'am afraid of upgrading it to 7.4. In this case thay stay at 6.

    What do you advise?

I think that the hardware restart has a significant impact on the problem. On the other two IBM Type 2980-B80 (B5300) switches until the restart everything was OK. The same upgrade path, same binaries with no problem until hardware reboot. After hard reboot same problem appeared.

--->>>How could I share via email restricted information about licenses?

restricted or whatever,.....License are unique, and associated to a Switch Serial Numer and WWN Number.

NOBODY!!!! can re-used the license, additional the license cannot be installed to another switch, for a simple reason ech switch have a unique SN and WWN

    Hi

OK, licenses are unique but I have a old report from SAN Health. This is confidential, from my point of view.

    Hare are licenseshow

    fceg3:admin> licenseshow
    cRSQbbd9dbdSTRci:

    S9cyeQ9SScVAdzfq:
Fabric Watch (Fabric Vision capable) license

    Hello,

to be honest this is complex issue and may be related to hardware of FOS bug, without Brocade support you will be not able to solve this issue in short manner.

You still dont provide right logs from port log dump port. Provided ouput is not from port 15 but mainly from port 3.

    You have to execute portlogdumpport

    Hi

    Thank you for your help.

I know that this problem is not trivial. I'am for 100% sure that this is a software bug. But at which version? Two my switches 5100 and two 5300 have the same fault. The bug appears after hardware/power reboot. I have checked it. Port number has no meaning. Switch is totaly out of production now. Nothing is connectend. Look the fresh action on port 0.

At "Thu Apr 11 10:26:30 2019" switch was rebooted.

    --->>>But at which version?

    NONE!

instead to discuss here about any BUG, you say to have a SAN-Health report.

in the report are all license listed.

at this point the answer ist very simple, check the SH and re-install the license with the command licenseadd

    Hi

Both 5100 are at v7.4.2c, and 5300 are at v7.4.2d. I do not know if it depends of hardware type but was I have done.

Switech are not harware rebooted but upgraded from 6.4.3 to 7.4.2 and nothing happend - stil 8g sfp was working as 8g. Than I move it to nowe location. This enforce poweroff and on. Just after poweron switch become 4g - stoped recognize 8g sfp.

Yes I have old SAN-Health reports. The licenses numbers are the same. Reinstalling licenses is a promising step, but just use licenseadd (maen overwrite) or first licenseremove and then add? Which licenses key? All? Reboot switch or not?

    Here are my licenses:

    you are very HARD!

the output you post is from licenseshow.

you have to have a look in the SAN-health in LICENSE SUMMARY

you insist the switch was License for 8GigFC, at this point you should find the license key in SH.

you need only to install the missing 8GigFC license

    Hi All

Finnally I have solved this problem. Thank you very much to everyone involved. I am guilty of a short explanation.

Everything described above gives the lack of an explicit 8g license, which is revealed not during the update but only after the hardware (poweoff) reboot of the switch. During upgrading process and after it everythink worked fine until power off and poweron.
A very similar description of the possible occurrence of problem is described at the beginning of the thread. However, I have noticed that the problematic switches had have an implicitly 8g license when running 6.4.3 firmware (do not showed when running licenesshow command), which after the upgrade process must have to be explicitly added with a licenseadd command. All the time I thought I had 8g licenses but it was only party truth. It has had to be regenerated (recreated) by Brocade and it was when Brocade published v7 of FabOS but I did not known this till today.

This licence name is "8 Gig FC license" as below:

    fceg3:admin> licenseshow
    Fabric license
Fabric Watch (Fabric Vision capable) license
    Extended Fabric license
    Trunking license
Performance Monitor (Fabric Vision capable) license
First Ports on Demand license - additional 8 port upgrade license
Second Ports on Demand license - additional 8 port upgrade license
    8 Gig FC license

    Hello,

are you pretty sure that someone did not remove license times ago ?

Check infro from license guide...so it looks like that you have same symptoms.

    Hi

I'm 100% sure that no human being (me nor my colleague) have done that. First of all I have saved output of "licensesshow" and after upgraade I compare it. They are the same - no differences.

Today I make an observation that after cold reboot (sysshutdown, unplug power cords and restart) system change behavior: before reboot recognize 8g sfp and after opposite.

    Best Regards

As I recall we had this situation some time in the past, and was told that from a certain firmware version, the 8Gb license was no longer required. However the ports are not automatically set to 8Gb, they need to be shut and opened, (disable/enable) every single port, and will then negotiate 8Gb.
