I have an old McData Sphereon 4500 fabric switch (serial T2001742) with v5.02 firmware. Is it possible to upgrade to v6 or v7 ? and where can I download the firmware from as this switch is no longer officially supported.
M-Series Switches are EOL and EOS, FW are no longer available for download.
Thats unfortunate, do you think there is much chance of me finding the firmware elsewhere, maybe somebody has a copy they can send me? or is it tied into the serial number?
Assuming I get the firmware is it even possible to do the upgrade on this switch from v5.02 to v7
--->>>...or is it tied into the serial number? No it is not, the FW Package is a Universal Bin File, 4400, 4500, 4700, 6064 and 6140

in order to Upgrade from 5.x to 7.x or higher MC-DATA 4500 was supported till Release 9.9.9 , you need the 6.x Package.
it was supported distruptive FW between more release, but to be honest I don't remember if such a Upgrade was supported from 5.x to 7.x, with other word if you start the Upgrade get a risk that the Firmware Upgrade become corrupted, and the switch is useless.
I would suggest you try to search in Google, i.e. by HP the switches was called M-Series Switches, but I'm not sure if the download is longer available.
