After login, site should return to page from which login commenced.

  • 1.  After login, site should return to page from which login commenced.

    Posted Apr 01, 2020 09:25 AM

    Scenario:
    1. I received an email from my Communities containing a link to a new ideation.
         a.  An ideation has been raised:
                   community.broadcom.com/participate/ideation-home/…

    2. I clicked on the link and the page opened.
    3. I clicked on "Sign In".
    4. After successful login, I am taken to the main support portal page, not the ideation page I came from.
    5. To get back to the ideation page, I go back to the email and click on the link again.
        a. Then I have to click "Sign In: again so the page can go find my cookie.
        b. At this point I am signed in and on the page I want to see.
        c. Now I am able to vote on the ideation if I so choose.

This would be much easier and more user-friendly if the login took you directly back to the page you started the login from.

    Hope this makes sense.

@Douglas Seaver  -  I tested on a fresh browser (Vivaldi) using your link using an external test account.   What browser are you using IE 11?   I see the .gov so I immediately starting thinking saved URLs after logins may be blocked.   Is it just the Broadcom Community or has this happened on other sites?  I need more info to open a case with the vendor.  Thanks, Jason

See the attached video of my test run through your scenario.

    Only happens on Broadcom site(s).

    This happened using Edge.

Got it - I'll run another test with MS Edge then check with the Okta SSO team before opening a ticket with the vendor.   Thanks for the fast reply.  ~jm

    Douglas,

The normal flow of login for all browsers would be the URL you came from is captured by the SSO (Okta) and after successful login redirect the user to his or her intended page.    I had our vendor test internally and they could not replication.  I have tested on my LAN and VPN and Personal PC and with the same result.

Can you please run one more test?  Try accessing the link from a home PC or non company LAN or Device.   I have seen in the past working for a bank which have similar security blocks as ,gov on browsers is redirects fail to help prevent phishing or browser take over events.   Typically, I've seen this with most banks and .gov companies using IE 11.   Since you are using Edge a MS product it still might be an internal IT block which we could validate if you tested on a home connection on an open machine.    Thanks for your patience on this one.   Jason

I just tried using my home laptop with Chrome. Does not take me back to the ideation page, which is where I was trying to log in from (to vote).

Doug - apologies for the delay -  I shared with the vendor the issues and tests I completed.   The vendor is adding an additional META tag to help IE 11 respond like MS Edge that might fix the issue.   We are rolling our mobile CSS issues over the next few weeks along with a product community search feature.   I am planning on rolling the script the vendor is recommended for our upcoming testing.   This may or may not fix the issue you are seeing.   I saw other notes from Carsten mentioning it having similar issues Chrome which we tested as well with no joy in duplicating.    I normally use Chrome for the normal day today and I get logged out of Okta from time to time while on VPN.  The reality is no SaaS software is perfect across all browsers.   Jason

Doug -   We have added the IE tag int our custom meta tag area in the site header:  <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">

The vendor does compatibility testing on IE Edge and 11, but that is on the codebase, not site design specific.

Where we generally see IE issues is with user/company-specific settings that disallow cookies or javascript/active scripting.    Please clear your cache and try to re-test your use case to see if this has removed the issue.

Lastly, based on our acquisition of Symantec, we continuously strive to evolve our end-user security so if you are seeing more MFA changes it is by design based on changing end-user connections and conditions.

Testing on my work computer today. After clearing cache,

    • Edge – returned me to the Broadcom home page after login (not the discussion page I was on).
    • IE11 – tried to return me to the Broadcom home page; after several minutes still have spinning arrows.
    • Chrome – worked as expected, returned me to the discussion and opened a reply dialog box.

I have discovered that if I use the browser's back arrow to get back to the discussion page, I will be signed in and able to reply. But that is also an annoyance I could do without.

@Douglas Seaver  - Thanks for retesting.  The routing after login is captured by Okta and sent to the community via a browser.    Back in the day, we used IBM Websphere SSO which was configurable - Otka is a great authentication tool but does not allow for many of the old configurations possibly due to risk.  I'll pass the new info back over to the team.  I'm guessing since the issues are persisting with Microsoft Browsers and possibly okta - I'll check with the SSO team to see if they can offer any insight.   Cheers ~jm

I was about to post the same thing when I saw this thread already existed.

+1 here, with Opera (Chrome Engine). This only happens for about a week now.

Seems to happen only the first time of the day, really anoying. In return, the 404 is gone when I try to login from inside a thread opened via an email link. Maybe those two are related, it started around the same time.

Also, yesterday saw a return of the "I need to enter 2FA codes multiple times again not just with IE" issue, when I had to 2FA with my Opera three times throughout the day. IP, location etc. was all fixed.

Frankly, there's always something with this software and it's piling up more and more.

    Regards,
    Carsten

p.s. yes, "2FA" is a verb now, by neccessity :)

I reported this problem right after the migration from Jive to Higher Logic. The problem largely remains. Occasionally HL will surprise me by taking me back to the page I was trying to view, but TBH I've gotten in the habit of opening a separate page just to handle the login. (It seems easier to just adapt to the bugs than to get them fixed.) This was simply never a problem with Jive.

I have tested this today on my home/personal laptop. I cleared the cache as requested prior to testing.
    • Chrome - seems to behave as desired.
    • IE11 - signon still takes me back to Broadcom home page.
    • Edge - seems to behave as desired.
I will try to test with my work computer tomorrow.
